The Parade of Awesomeness Podcast - Episode 47 -... →
As the year-long Parade of Awesomeness project draws to a close, I’ve chosen for the final podcast episode the song Mine Again by Black Lab (courtesy of the Podsafe Music Network).
I hope you enjoyed this cross-section of my musical tastes (at least, from those artists wise enough to allow their music to be distributed freely over the internet). I’d love to hear any feedback you have;...
StartCooking.com is a great website for people who want to learn the basics of how to cook. Kathy Maister and Atelier Transfert have put together a bunch of really simple videos, ranging from recipes like “French Onion Soup” and “Santa Fe Chile” to cooking techniques like “How to Brown Ground Beef” and “How to Fry an Egg.”
The videos are well-made...

This is Samm Bennett’s song which he published on MeFi music back in 2007 under his name flapjax at midnite. He’s got a new CD out, called Roomful of Ghosts, and it’s not bad at all.

I normally don’t care much for mashups. This is a rare exception, created by flatluigi over on Metafilter Music. Seriously, it’s the best mashup ever.

I enjoy stories, but years of reading for college have taught me the bad habit of skimming through paragraphs rather than reading slowly and enjoying the process. That’s why I love audiobooks: I can get the full impact of the story without skipping ahead. And, I get the added benefit of being able to do other things while I listen.
Audible is a great and inexpensive source for downloadable...

The Free Sound Project is free archive of sound effects. The sounds are all licensed under a Creative Commons Sampling+ license, which basically means you’re free to do whatever you want to with it, except for using it in advertising, so long as you provide attributition.
There are hundreds of sound samples, from nature sounds to electronic sounds to voices. You can have alarm clocks,...

Today we hear from Richard Shindell, who has graciously made several of his tracks available for download on his website. If you ever get a chance to hear the song Transit, off of the same album as today’s song, Courier, you should definitely give it a listen.

TrueCrypt makes it easy to encrypt files on your computer.
When you first start TrueCrypt, you create a file that will store the data you want to keep secure. After creating the file and assigning a password to it, you use TrueCrypt to mount the file as a removable drive. From that point on, your operating system treats it just like a flash drive. You drag files to or from it, you can edit files,...

This is a fascinating blog about a young American woman who came to live in Russia just before the collapse of the Soviet Union. I found the blog via MeFi Projects; here is how the author describes her work:
The black market Snickers index. Change given in chewing gum. A party game where, if you guess how many rubles are in the jar, you win a jelly bean. And oh yeah, non-candy-related mayhem and...

CarrotAdventure made a happy dance remix of a song by Kate Bush. Its waveform looks like a rocketship in Audacity, which is also cool.

This guy from the Steam Forums posted some photos of a real life TF2-style Dispenser that he built. It’s made out of 20mm fiberboard and has three compartments, which I assume most hold spare ammo clips and first aid kits. More details available at the link above.

Y’all remember that video from a few months back where Matt Harding went around the world and danced with people? Well, the Youtube commenters, clueful as ever, figured out that it was a hoax! In this video, Harding explains how he did it, using photoshop, clever camera work, and lots of animitronic puppets.
(The first five minutes of the video is the original video; the latter part is the...

Just FYI, this blog is going on hiatus until the new year. Happy holidays!
A man named Jim Simmons has outfitted a remote control helicopter with a .45 caliber handgun. He built his own UAV. That is pretty awesome.

A Christmas classic from Metafilter user PinkStainlessTail. Recorded in 2004. No, that’s not a typo in the song name. Just listen.
